Here are a few tips and tricks for using VisuaLinks. We hope these help you to use VisuaLinks more efficiently.
Hold down the Shift Key when using Merge Objects to unmerge previously merged objects.
Right-click on an object within a View to display options that can be applied to the selected object - add to Hit List, add to Exclusion Values, or modify display settings - just to name a few.
The speed of the Point Zoom mode is controlled by the mode options (the drop-down arrow under the tool). The speed of the + and - zoom (in the bottom, right-corner of the View) is set under the General tab of Main Settings.
The size of the icons in the main display can be changed. Edit these lines in the ClientResources.properties file to increase or decrease the icon size:
  • vl.gui.icon.width=16

  • vl.gui.icon.height=16

  • This diagram was generated from a Check Fraud application. The data was provided by a major US Bank where checks were illegally cashed from a number of different bank accounts. The clusters presented (Circle of Circles Grouping - by Account) show what accounts had the largest number of frauds perpetrated against them. It was later found that the accounts associated with the largest clusters also had indirect (non-obvious relationships) back to the shared address.

    What's New?

VAI is currently deep into the development of VisuaLinks 2.0, tentatively slated for release in January, 2003. This release includes many feature enhancements, new features, bug fixes, performance improvements and optimizations. It represents a major milestone for the enterprise-class analytical software community. We are currently in the testing phase of the development cycle. We have built a brand-new testing environment to allow for testing under a variety of configurations and loads.
Some of the new 2.0 features include:

    • Duplicate Detector
    • Name Matcher
    • Word Count
    • Cross Database Query
    • Rules/Alerts
    • Profile Controller
    • Server-to-Server Connection
    • Instant Messaging
    • Session AutoSave
    • Skins (backgrounds)
    • And many, many more…
These features - and others - will be spotlighted and reviewed in future issues of this newsletter.

This version will be a major version upgrade for many VisuaLinks clients. We are creating a whole new suite of support documentation and will include migration instructions for an easy transition. VAI is very excited to achieve this significant milestone, giving the analytical community a more powerful, more reliable and more complete analytical solution than has ever been available before.
    Feature of the Month

Several new features have been added to VisuaLinks over recent months in preparation for the 2.0 release. This month, we're spotlighting the Word Count feature.

Word Count performs a physical count of the different words in selected attributes.

Available from the Service Center and the Services menu, Word Count returns a summary of the white-spaced delimited words in selected attributes for a selected object type. The results are loaded into the Query Results Panel where the unique words are displayed with the number of times the word appeared in the processed data model. Entries can be queried (drilled-down) to display the objects that contained the selected words.

Word Count has several built-in stop words - words that are not counted. You can add new words to the stop-list from the Word Count window or through the client properties file. Words added to the stop list in the Word Count window are temporary; words added to the client properties file are permanent.

Word Count results help identify frequencies of different values contained in data. Often, data includes unique, unexpected or misspelled words that can form the basis for additional analyses. This feature is most useful when MEMO or TEXT fields are present within the data sources. It provides an additional method to discover new analysis targets.
