Winners of the Maryland's International Leadership Awards
On April 3, 2003, Chris Westphal, Co-founder and CEO of Visual Analytics, received Maryland's International Business Leadership Award.
Maryland's International Business Leadership Awards are presented annually to an individual within a Maryland company who has led his company to new global heights. The award also recognizes individuals for the entrepreneurial spirit, determination, creativity and cultural sensitivity that the global marketplace demands.
We are very proud of this honor. You can find more information in our Press Releases.
Thailand Conference
Recently, Visual Analytics participated in the 2003 Pacific Rim Conference on Money Laundering & Financial Crimes.
The conference was held in Bangkok, Thailand from March 24-26, 2003 and was attended by approximately 600
participants from over 30 countries. Information regarding the conference can be found at:
www.fincrime2003.org/.
This year's theme was "The Impact of Financial Crime on International Security and the Global Economy:
Public and Private Industry Working Together." The conference brought together a wide range of delegates,
including representatives from many government agencies around Asia and the Pacific Rim, the banking industry,
and commercial organizations involved in financial crime systems.
Our CEO, Chris Westphal, was one of the keynote speakers at the conference. Chris delivered a well-received
presentation entitled "Technologies for Money Laundering Analyses: New Approaches for Combating Financial Crimes."
Following is the description of the presentation as provided in the conference program.
"The discussion will be based on describing several of the new requirements in the US Patriot Act and the
issues and concerns of enforcement agencies involved in the acquisition, sharing, and analysis of financial data.
The talk will focus on the utilization of collaborative technologies - and how they will play a critical role in
the next-generation systems that are being designed to address this complex task. No longer shall analysts work
in isolation - they must start to operate as part of a larger network involving the data, resources, and
interactions of many different organizations. Additionally, time will be spent reviewing automated procedures
to help detect critical patterns and look for people on watch lists, and other types of alert-based targets."
You can also view the presentation material.
During the three day conference, attendees visited a number of vendors who were demonstrating their
systems and capabilities. Visual Analytics hosted a booth with a newly-formed partner company,
Data Analytical Technology Co., LTD (DAT). DAT is structured to offer consulting and IT support
within Thailand and the Southeast Asian marketplaces focusing on advanced data analytics.
More info on DAT can be found at www.datechno.com/.
The VAI booth was well-attended and even had visitors from some of our state-side customers.
Visual Analytics staff also met with other anti-money laundering companies and agencies,
deepening and solidifying these important relationships. Among those we met were: the
Thailand Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO - a current client), the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA),
Law Enforcement Technology Solutions Co., LTD (a subsidiary company of Loxley - another VAI partner company),
and several other government agencies and commercial integrators from Thailand.
Visual Analytics is committed to expanding its financial crimes and money laundering business base in Asia and,
with the help of our partner companies, expects to expand the breadth of our service offerings to a number of
other industries including counter-terrorism, narcotics, law enforcement, and commercial fraud and forensics.
