What's New?
DIG Server-to-Server
With another year gone, and the New Year here, DIG is starting off on the right foot. The Server-to-Server feature of DIG has everyone at Visual Analytics very excited. This feature allows DIG users to connect to other DIG Servers to pull selected information out of the remote server's databases -- even across the Internet. The advantages to this are many.
The connection between DIG Servers is secure. The local server authenticates with a remote server using a secure key. The local server can allow a remote server access to databases based on permission and security settings configured on both servers. Both of the servers retain full control and access to their own data sources while selectively exposing data to other, remote, servers. This is a key aspect of Server-to-Server functionality, especially for installations with sensitive or classified data.
DIG is a viable source for the many of government agencies that are looking for a better, faster, more evolved solution to quick data sharing methods. DIG's Server-to-Server capability is just one of the critical features that differentiate Visual Analytics from the competition.

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you use DIG quickly and more efficiently.

Setting Group Security
In this article, we give a quick run-through of setting group security.
1. In the Enterprise Manager Tree, double-click Users/Groups to display the current users and groups.
2. Right-click in the white area and select New Group to create a new group.
The Add New Group window will open.
3. Give the new group a Group Name and a Group Description and then click OK.
4. Click on the Members tab to add users to the new group.
5. Click the check-box for each user that is to be a member of the Group and click OK.
The new group is complete and is displayed with the other groups, as shown below.
The next step is to assign the group to the data sources the users are allowed to access.
1. Right click on a data source that you want to grant the group access to and choose Properties.
2. Select Security to access the group and user list. Click on each user or group you wish to add to the data source and click the Add button. Click OK to save changes.
3. Click on each user or group you wish to add to the data source and click the Add button.
4. Click OK to save changes.
5. In the Permissions area, click the Allow checkbox to grant the group to Read access to this data source.
6. Click OK to assign the permissions.
Adding a new user and assigning permissions is a very similar process. The primary difference is that users are added directly to the group as the new group was added above.
Generally speaking, VAI encourages customers to manage permissions based on groups rather than individual users. You can create groups that have the necessary permissions, then add and remove users to the groups as needed. This approach is more efficient as it reduces the management overhead significantly.

DIG as a Web based application
DIG can now be launched as a web-based application that has been re-designed and developed using the Microsoft® .NET architecture. This is often referred to as "No Touch Deployment" because there is no application software deployed to the local user's PC or workstation. "Thin-Client Application" is another term that could be used to describe this new interface.
There are several advantages to using DIG as a web-based application. The first advantage is accessibility. The web-based DIG interface can be accessed by anyone with Internet access from almost anywhere in the world.
The second advantage is scalability. As the number of users increases, a web-based infrastructure is fairly easy to expand, thus supporting larger numbers of users and greater information dissemination.

From either access method, users reach the same DIG Search Page where they can query available data sources.
Because of its .NET architecture, DIG has the same look, feel and functionality when used in a Client/Server environment or in a web-based configuration.
A new DIG 2.0 Release Candidate is currently available for select clients. For more information, call us at 301-407-2200 or visit our web site at www.visualanalytics.com
