Semantic Web

Most people understand how to use an Internet search engine to perform simple keyword searches. In fact, much of the Internet is considered a large "open source" database referring to billions of web pages, HTML text, documents, presentations, briefings, tables, and related content. Unfortunately, most of this content is geared toward human-reading and understanding because there is little machine encoding with respect to the actual content.

Recently the concept of a Semantic Web* has been discussed to provide a framework for encoding the meaning of data through machine readable formats. Ultimately, this can provide more focused and refined content because there will be a distinction between common terms such as China (a country, formal dinnerware, or the name of a person). The improvements expected through the adaptation of a Semantic Web will significantly enhance our ability to find and classify data in support of analysis.

However, until there is global acceptance on how to effectively encode data, there is a lot of ongoing research pertaining to the automated encoding of documents and open source data. Commercial systems such as AeroText™, ClearForest™, and Rosette® Entity Extractor represent some of the more accepted systems for document classification, categorization, and entity extraction.

Much of the data available in the world today are stored in non-relational formats (e.g., text) that can be difficult to utilize in automated analytical systems. Typically, analysts must read all of the passages, cables, narratives, memos, or other related text to fully understand the content of the data. Embedded within all of this text are references to names, addresses, locations, dates/times, and other critical data. To be of use, systems must be able to identify and extract this information, essentially creating a relational format.

VAI's recent partnership with Basis Technology is founded on their Rosette Entity Extractor (REX) technology, used to process unstructured text, open source documents, and free-form message traffic to expose the names of organizations, locations, dates, people, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and other customized entities.
