Washington/Baltimore HIDTA, February 19, 2004
On February 19, VAI attended a live demonstration of DIG and VL at the Washington/Baltimore HIDTA. HIDTA representatives conducted a live demonstration of the functional simplicity and power of Digital Information Gateway to representatives of some two dozen law enforcement agencies in the mid Atlantic area. The ease of use and utility of the product, combined with its impeccable server to server security made quite an impression on those attending. Police, government attorneys and municipal IT managers expressed great interest and a lively discussion followed as to how IDG could best be used to promote information sharing and make life more difficult to offenders, regardless of where they might run. Clearly, regular information sharing was agreed to be the best defense against terrorists; the local variety as well as the foreign.
AFCEA Homeland Defense Conference in Washington, DC, February 24-26, 2004
VAI partnered with Perot Government Systems at the AFCEA Homeland Defense Conference in Washington, DC, February 24-26, at the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center. continued from the cover
Unlike these traditional approaches to sharing data, VAI has pursued the virtual data warehouse approach where all data is
left in its original location and format. The owners of the data control who is allowed access and how much they are allowed
to see for any given request. Requests are made from a network of distributed servers that are responsible for the authentication,
security, and load balancing of the system. This approach allows for n-way sharing of data where any number of agencies can share
data - allowing for data producers, consumers, or both. Furthermore, this approach does not "automatically" combine law enforcement
or intelligence data with public records unless specifically requested by the analysts. This allows the user to control how the
data is integrated and shared with others.
As DHS creates its networks and establishes its policies - VAI will be ready with the software that will make it all come
together to fulfill its mission. We are pleased to be a part of this exciting new era and look forward to working with DHS
and other agencies throughout the world to create the best framework for sharing, analyzing, and collaborating on distributed
data sets.
