What's New?
The VAI Partner Program keeps expanding as we build relationships with new systems integrators and technology companies.
Over the past month, several new companies have joined the Partner Program. A short description of each is provided below.
VAI and the Maryland Information and Network Dynamics (MIND) Laboratory (University of Maryland) have partnered to
expand the level of advanced information systems and collaboration technologies incorporated into the Data Clarity Suite (DCS).
VAI and the MIND Lab are working together to build upon the existing visualization, data sharing, and data mining
capabilities available within the DCS to further address complex, real-world data analytics. The partnership is
designed to share ideas, technologies, and personnel to help define the next generation analytical tools for
counter-terrorism, money laundering, criminal investigations, and fraud detection. For more information on

continued from the cover
In a recent analysis of I-94 data (arrival-departure records), an individual was targeted because he had 56 different passport
numbers used in over 200 flights made from/to a foreign country over the course of a single year. This volume of travel is
somewhat expected for a person in his line of business as an international courier, however the number of misrepresentations
made on recording his passport number, whether accidental or intentional, occurred so frequently that it could not
be overlooked. Most of the variations came from the data entry process where the numbers 2 and 5, 4 and 9, or 1 and 7
can be easily mistaken or transposed (especially with someone who has bad penmanship). The good news in this particular
case was that the poor quality of the data actually worked in our favor for exposing his actions.
The old adage, "garbage in - garbage out" will ring true for quite some time. Thus, VAI routinely advocates changing the
collection process whenever possible to minimize any errors or inconsistencies to better facilitate the analytics that will
be performed. Additionally, VAI also encourages the application of the DisambiguatorĀ® functions built into VisuaLinks and
the newest ETL capabilities of DIG to help add value to the information being processed.
More recently, VAI has aligned with other industry leaders involved with maximizing the value and quality of data.
Currently, VAI has active relationships with several information providers including ChoicePoint, Qsent, and LexisNexis.
Each has invested a considerable amount of resources into acquiring, standardizing, cleaning, and publishing their data.
Thus, they represent the authoritative references within the community for a large number of public records and related sources. Furthermore, VAI, in conjunction with Group 1 Software, Language Analysis Systems, and Basis Technologies, is providing a collective suite of value-added capabilities to improve the quality and utility of data as it is derived from our clients' data sources.
The quality of the data will forever play a critical role within the analytical and investigative communities.
Better results can be achieved by providing better data and the partnerships formed by VAI provide the foundation
for creating some of the most effective solutions in the marketplace.
