Frederick, MD - September 17, 2008- by Rebecca McClay | Gazette Staff Writer - Visual Analytics, which tracks trends for law enforcement, has moved from Poolesville into new office condominium space above the Greene Turtle on Carroll Creek in downtown Frederick.

With 35 employees, the privately held 10-year-old company provides data analysis and information sharing systems for investigations on money laundering, other financial crimes, narcotics trafficking, terrorism and other crimes.

CEO Christopher Westphal said the company wanted larger space for its growing ranks, plus nearby amenities for visiting clients such as hotels and restaurants and an easier commute for its employees, many of whom live in Frederick County.

Visual Analytics was founded in 1998 by Westphal, of Leesburg, Va., chief technology officer David O'Connor, who lives in Frederick County, and COO Bennett McPhatter, who lives near Poolesville.

"We are very proud [of the new space] and are going to be making sure we have more of our clients here," Westphal said. "We are certainly happy to be here and we look forward to growing here. It's reinvigorated the business with a lot of energy."

The company, which will occupy three condos on the second and third floors, is on track to boost revenues this year by 70 percent to 100 percent, Westphal said.

"We definitely had a nice spurt of growth this year and the trend looks to continue," he said, without offering specifics.

Visual Analytics' products — such as Data Clarity Suite, VisuaLinks and Digital Information Gateway — allow users to search database servers, Web pages, documents and e-mail servers and discover patterns and hidden networks, according to a company statement. Law enforcement agencies and homeland security agencies in Asia, Europe and South America are among its clients.

Other clients are the Office of National Drug Control Policy, several state attorneys general offices, state police departments, the Department of Defense, the Internal Revenue Service and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Westphal graduated from Tulane University and has 20 years of experience in artificial intelligence technologies, technology patterns and data mining. He has published two books and several articles and newsletters on the topics.

O'Connor, a Marine Corps veteran, received his bachelor's in computer science from the University of Maryland and has more than 12 years of experience in the industry.

McPhatter, also a Marine veteran, designed the company's newest product, Digital Information Gateway, a less expensive search tool. He has worked with visualization technologies and databases for more than a decade.
