Data Mining for Intelligence, Fraud and Criminal Detection: Advanced Analytics and Information Sharing Technologies
CEO of Visual Analytics Inc. and one of the most respected consultants in the area of data mining and pattern discovery, Chris Westphal, has released Data Mining for Intelligence, Fraud and Criminal Detection: Advanced Analytics and Information Sharing Technologies. The book documents the core analytical methodologies necessary for addressing complex data environments and overviews current information sharing trends and advanced analytical methodologies. This book will become a staple reference for the analytical community.

Mr.Westphal is donating 100% of the royalty proceeds from the sale of this book to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF).

Released: December 2008

Patterns for Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Operations
Around the world, the banking and finance community provides all the Suspicious Transaction Reports (STR) and Cash Transaction Reports (CTR) for analysis by Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs). However, feedback is seldom provided to the originators of the data to expose the types of patterns and trends that can be identified as well as the data collection inconsistencies and problems that exist. By collectively sharing this information, everyone can benefit from more accurate and timely analysis to help combat financial crimes and money laundering operations around the world. This presentation overviews some patterns/trends and data collection issues contained in the STR/CTR data sets from various countries.

Intelligence Conferences
Visual Analytics' CEO, Christopher Westphal, has provided invited speeches addressing advanced analytical techniques, providing insight into the interactive and iterative process of visual analysis, in which data is presented using visual paradigms to discover previously unknown patterns and trends. These addresses are interactive discussions detailing the exploratory framework of visual analysis, using the data to guide/drive the analysis, and thereby playing to the strengths of human cognition.

Data Mining Solutions
This book presents methodologies for preparing environments to perform data mining with in-depth discussions of the approaches used to analyze data. This book also provides an overview of data mining as it is currently being done with a variety of technologies, emphasizing the use of data visualization with case studies of actual data mining engagements.

Net-Centric Web Approaches to Intelligence and National Security
The IT boom of the 1990’s left many organizations and companies awash in data. With the popularity of the Internet, data sets were collected on virtually every topic, for every purpose, for every mouse-click, for every reason imaginable. Often, multiple databases or huge data warehouses were built to store these immense quantities of data. Although billions of dollars are spent every year to collect and store information, data owners paradoxically often spend only pennies on analysis. What has been missing from the IT landscape is a way in which all of the data can be effectively analyzed – a way to connect-the-dots. Without a means to use and understand the data that has been collected, the owners of the data will never realize the potential benefits of these resources. This has already been evidenced with the events of 9/11 and the government’s limited effort to share, combine, analyze, and report on the pre- and post-indicators.This chapter discusses the next generation information sharing and analytical systems that are being created and deployed to overcome these issues to better address terrorism, money laundering, narcotics trafficking, and fraud investigations.
